The Women: Thuli

My name is Thuli Sibiya and I was born in South Africa. I was born on the 17 may, both my parents are deceased. My father died in 1976 he was in a car accident, my mother died in 1987 from cancer of the esophagus. I have 3 brothers and 4 sisters, 3 of my sisters and 1 of my brothers are married.

I have 1 son and he is 21 years old he is working as an assistant manager at a meat market. My sons father passed away in 2001 from throat cancer. I am not married.

I have been trained as an HIV/AIDS counselor, before I joined Operation Bobbi Bear permanently I was working as a lecturer in one of the private nursing institutions, I also worked with Philisani Projects doing house visits to people that were HIV infected.

Jackie invited me to attend a conference with her in Johannesburg and there after introduced me to Operation Bobbi Bear. I had a lot of interest in Bobbi Bear because I had the experience in HIV/AIDS. Jackie asked me to do the training to become a child safety officer which I did and in the training Jackie gave me a module and asked me to train the participants in HIV/AIDS. I went home and prepared myself and the following day I went into Bobbi Bear and did my Training. Jackie was so impressed but I was not sure that was what she wanted, I was very happy when she told me “you knew what you were doing Thuli Thank You”.

I was busy in training one day in the nursing school when Jackie phoned me and said to me “I want to see you in my office now” I asked her why and she could not tell me why. I dropped everything I was doing and left to go to Jackie’s offices in Athlone Park. When I got there I was told I was being interviewed now, after I was interviewed I was told that I was to start work permanently the following day.

I was with Bobbi Bear for a year and then I was asked to counselor the rape victims, all went very well and was very successful. I was then chosen to be the trainer for all the Child Safety Officers at Operation Bobbi Bear and I accepted the offer. I went for training as a qualified trainer with Edutel and I am now a trainer at Operation Bobbi Bear
